If true, that's even cooler than what Bill Clinton did

I highly doubt that it's true, but I can't imagine celebrating the break up of a family.

I had a conversation with my 30 year old daughter while hanging out in SF. The discussion turned to politics. She was angry about the non-progressive part of D political selling points. She claimed that they were not reaching out enough to get her demographic on board. She was disappointed that Bernie was not a D candidate for president.

I asked her, "who was the last president that really cared about the common people, who lived a life that spoke to these values?"

She only took a couple of seconds to think about it. "Jimmy Carter".

I agreed. "And how did Jimmy Carter end up?"

"He was undermined and vilified and cancelled."

I agreed again, "Do you think Bernie would have fared any better as a president?"

We agreed, "no".

Maybe Bernie is better off, and his political career more long lasting, as the conscious of the Dem party.

We agreed that might be true.

interesting convo.

I dunno if it does much good to no longer pursue a candidate who "really cared about the common people" just cuz like 45 years ago one dood was "undermined and vilified and cancelled."

But, let's go with it!

Cuz I think "undermined and vilified and cancelled" is kind of exactly what happened to Bernie too.

Wasn't there an awful lot of controversy surrounding the DNC's treatment of Bernie?

And I think all the undermining and vilification and cancellation should still be weighed against things like, the potential that the American people might actually stop and say, "oh hey, it's actually pretty nice to be able to just go to the fucking doctor without fear of my claim being denied"

Bernie is not even a Democrat, why should the Dems pay for his campaign for Pres?

He was able to run as an Ind, but Bernie compromised and decided running as a D was his best chance of winning. Because....money.

I can't speak for anyone else, but pragmatism and finding acceptable compromises has been key to reaching my goals in life.

well, for one thing...Bernie just might have had a better chance of winning in 2016 than the candidate Dems went with instead, but hindsight is always 20/20.

and, indeed, pragmatism and acceptable compromises tend to be a good thing in life. So let's both of us be pragmatic, and willing to compromise, then? And by both of us, I mean, both of us.

Cuz it otherwise may be quite the illustration of where we are and how we got here:

establishment dems lecturing progressives about pragmatism and compromise, while also hesitating to concede to progressives for that very same sake of compromise; or, to come up with any practical, sensible, realistic, otherwise-pragmatic way of winning back voters.

(particularly in lieu of compromising with the progressive end of the dem base, despite potentially millions of votes left on the table)

i guess dems should just lie to win over voters

that seems to be the winning formula

And the progressive end will now lose decades of social progress for women, people of color and healthcare accessibility. Much of it won't be won back in your lifetime.

As I stated before, the Dems with a big "D" really haven't lost much. The "elites" never do.

The "potentially millions" get to decide in two years if they want the beatings to continue or chart a different path. Good luck.

again dude, it's not just "the progressive end" that loses decades of progress. It's all of us.

As for whether it can "be won back in [my] lifetime," we can only hope. That's the goal here!

But more and more, I dunno whether the biggest obstacle to winning back progress is the pubs explicitly trying to take it away, or whether it is the Dems telling me to quit making such a big deal about progress anyway.

and, heads up, Japhy: for you to distinguish Dems with a big "D" as "really haven't lost much," from the social demographics who lost decades of progress, this seems like quite the tell.

For real! Considering the way these comments just shrug off women and people of color, it's no wonder at all the Dem establishment lost votes precisely from women and people of color last election. Whoda thunk it!

If the Dems with a big D have the sense to compromise and be pragmatic and be the champions of social progress (that, once upon a time, didn't they even kinda claim to be?), for demographics like women and people of color, and for issues like healthcare accessibility, maybe Dems with a big D WILL gain the "potentially millions" of votes they need in two years to chart a different path.

If Dems with a big D do NOT do that, then it's time to admit both major parties represent little more than the "elites" who never lose much regardless, not in America at least...and I guess the beatings will continue.

Oh, and good luck right back to you!

I am an old white guy with more million$ in the bank than I can spend before I die. This all has little to no effect on me personally. I did not lose shit. If anything the next 4 years could be $alad days for me personally. I was born into a golden demographic and made the most of it.

We are not all in the same boat. I am more than happy to get in your boat and help you row. I want to see those who are less fortunate than me do better. As long as we are rowing towards a likely better place for everyone I'm in. If you insist upon rowing towards the falls and some sort of righteous glorious ideologically pure crash, then fuck it. I am getting in a different boat where my rowing could move society forward. My time and money and effort will be focused on those boats that most likely move the most people forward

I voted for what would be in the best interest of LGBTQ, people of color, women, the poor AND society in general. None of this would be happening if the 20M people who sat this out, instead held their nose and voted for Kamala. It's all about probabilities, Jill Stein was never going to win. Too many D's with a capital D, too many R's with a capital R, the numbers didn't add up. Pick a side that best aligns with your views, compromise. Or sit it out and live with the consequences of your apathy. I suspect a lot of people are going to regret their apathy. And a lot of roadkill are going to be surprised that none of this benefits them beyond the fleeting victory dances they get to do for the next year.

Society is going backwards for the next 4 years. It think it might be a good thing. Too many people do not understand the value, and the years it took, to get what they take for granted. Now they will get to see the true glory of the "good old days".

But definitely NOT all of us.
