Fleetwood Mac ( Stevie Nicks ) is probably my favorite female artist.
If you're gonna put her in the top 10, i'd have chosen 'Gypsy', which is such a good song.

pdub wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 9:18 am I think Radiohead is intensely unique and experimental and there isn't/wasn't a sound like them.
Definitely acquired taste.
I admit, it's kinda my own 'Get Your Freak On' ( really, Get Your Freak On? ).
Yea. They’re extremely talented, super creative, and the best at what they do.

But what they do is pigeonhole themselves into that “bad acid trip” sound - just always dark, gloomy, coming from some negative energy kind of music

Every other band on your list - Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd etc - features a diverse catalogue of music - some happy songs, some sad, some dancey, some moody…the point is they’re capable of a broad palette of musical artistry.

But Radiohead always (at least since Ok Computer and definitely since Kid A, when they went all in on the dark moody vibe and never looked back), is consistently the kind of music that sounds like OMG THIS SUCKS WHEN ARE THE DRUGS GONNA WEAR OFF.

They really do nothing but. I’m not even sure they’re capable of doing anything but, despite their talent and create prowess.

Heck, even Nirvana, the band so depressed their lead singer literally killed himself*, can be comparatively cheeky and whimsical.

But I still hold out hope that maybe someday Radiohead will finally get over their bad trip, and just like smoke some weed about it and make a bitchin’ 90s guitar rock album again.

*and who are we kidding, we all know Courtney did it

Favorite female artist is a whole different discussion!

I’ll say Hanson

My little brother's band opened for Hanson at the Granada.

Very fair about Radiohead.
I would argue their sound has definitely changed dramatically - but for sure, it's all pretty dark since OK Computer.
This is why I chose Paranoid Android as the song and not, say, Burn The Witch.

I like when we agree! And I wasn’t trying to be too controversial or hot take, but it’s just that yea Radiohead can be dark.

I used to LOVE them, until I put them on as make out music and the chick was like omg what is this weird shit? Let’s just put on some music by that band that opened for Hanson or something.

But still, many Radiohead fans refuse to accept that Radiohead is anything less than goat, gloominess be damned.

Plus, their biggest hit was and still prob is Creep right?

Cuz I mean they really are among the best 90s guitar rock around. Pablo Honey and The Bends both wail

pdub wrote: Thu Sep 16, 2021 7:38 am Rolling Stone's top 11 list ( top 500 ) has some issues:

11. God Only Knows - Beach Boys ( woof )
10. Hey Ya - Outkast ( no - what?! )
9. Dreams - Fleetwood Mac ( not even their best song )
8. Get Ur Freak On - Missy Elliot ( you could stop here - jesus )
7. Strawberry Fields Forever - Beatles ( i guess you gotta have a Beatles song on here - they're kinda overrated tho )
6. What's Goin On - Marvin Gaye ( good song, seems high )
5. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana ( started a 'movement' like Beatles but this seems pretty damn high )
4. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan ( fine with this )
3. Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke ( fine with this )
2. Fight The Power - Public Enemy ( no - a Spike Lee movie track isn't 2nd best ever )
1. Respect - Aretha Franklin ( respect )

A top 10 list without the Rolling Stones is a fail.

Other whiffs:
30. Royals - Lorde ( this is worse than any of the top 10 - all of the top 10 I could see argued being in the top 100 - this belongs nowhere near a top 500 list, much less a top 30 )
36. Seven Nations Army - White Stripes ( it's catchy - and sports fans have latched on to said catchy riff - not top 100 )
39. B.O.B - Outkast ( two Outkast songs in the top 40? )
61. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin ( i know it's a cliche that the opening is one of the first things people learn when they start up guitar - but this is just way too low - 'Royals' is 30 spots better than Stairway to Heaven???? )

The Rolling Stone must have hired some millennials to make this list.

In a sense, it’s difficult to tell what modern music will go down as classics

except Tenacious D

Only gripe would be that Missy probably should be #1.

But, hot take time time: that top 10 are all good songs made by talented artists.

Are there any objective metrics that go into these lists? Record sales or airtime or some other way to measure besides just some intern who had to have a list on the editor’s desk by 9am tomorrow?

Music is weird. Totally fine with recognizing Outkast for their greatness. Hey Ya isn't close to my favorite Outkast song. Hell, it's not even an Outkast song. Favorite might be Player's Ball, Rosa Parks, idk. No one's going to remember those like Hey Ya, though.

Compare that to movies, though, where things like Avatar, The Fast movies, Transformers, are just going to die.

I'd put Missy's Freak On in line with a Transformers movie.
Sounds bout right.

Outkast doesn't make my top 10 but i'd have one of their songs in the top 25 - it'd be like putting Dwayne Wade on a top 10 all time list.

Missy's Freak On would be like putting Greg Ostertag on a top 10 all time list.
