my question as well

i’ve paid of ~85% of mine

personally, i think this relief should be done with more precision. i know too many people that got loans because they could, and not necessarily because they really needed them. the money ended up being spent on things other than the essentials for their educations

i also agree that the system, in general, needs an overhaul...1) employers need to stop preferring a college degree if it is of no benefit to the actual work, 2) trade school degrees and certifications need to be better advertised, supported, and sought after by employers, and 3) the loan structure needs re-tooled
I'm so with you on this. The need for college has become dogmatic. At the current price, it shouldn't be.

It's fun as hell. The first jobs I had were through college connections. But I still don't recommend college for people who want to get into my line of work.

Loan forgiveness and free public schools just give those institutions carte blanche to jack up prices more, and for a lot of professions it really doesn't provide the value that John Q Taxpayer is going to have to put up for it. Your points 1 and 2 are so true.

People who provide a service of value will always seek out more assurance that they will get paid for what they are providing. That isn't unique to the government getting involved. It's Day One stuff in a business class.

Day one in a business class was mostly syllabus day, figuring out which frat boys were gonna drink during class all semester, and also handing out Koch Industries swag.

I'm going to break down Walrus' post and hopefully he or someone else can clarify it for me.

"College was never that expensive (generally speaking) until the department of education was formed".
* Is this true and when was the Department of Education formed?

"They allowed students to borrow government guaranteed loans that could not be erased in bankruptcy".
* Is this true?

"College administrative staff knew they could increase the price of tuition because it was guaranteed".
* Is this true? What was the percentage of college students getting a "government guaranteed loan" and what about those who were not?

"A similar thing happened in housing when the government started lowering interest rates ridiculously low and they started backing the mortgages".
* Is this true? What is this "thing" that happened? The price of homes increased because of government backed mortgages? What about the mortgage rates?

"They love high priced homes because it creates higher taxes".
* Is this true? It makes sense but who is "they" and what taxes are being referred to in this comment? Property taxes? Who gets the money from property taxes?

" The common denominator is obvious".
* I apologize for being an idiot. What exactly is the "common denominator" here?

US Dept. of Education was formed in 1979. Tuition rates have generally increased by an average of 8% a year over time. It's hard to track costs of tuition back in 1979 when gas was $.86 a gallon and average income was around $17,000 a year and an average house was $58,000.

An estimated 30% of undergrads have federal student loans.

There are some ways that you can erase student loans in bankruptcy: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/for ... bankruptcy

I am not wading into the mortgage stuff. It would take too long.

Gutter, I applaud you for asking these questions. Yes, everything I wrote is 100% true. However, if you ask people on here, they are going to try to avoid saying I'm correct simply because they hate me. This is also true, and you know it. I can't be right about anything according to some on here. ;)

I hope no one one here "hates" you. Definitely reasons for people to call you out, question things you claim and say, and at times get annoyed with what you post.
I have no doubt you're right about some things and I even give you credit for educating me on some topics. Thank you.
Problem is, you often use sources that are simply not credible - and/or are highly biased with an agenda.
Yes, of course others do it on here too. Two wrongs don't make it right.
