Well, when first down is a wide receiver screen for no gain, and second down is a wide receiver screen for -1 yards, and third down is a run up the middle to give our punter room. I'll remember you posted this.
We've had like 7 different offensive "schemes" since Mangino, but they've all become the play calling I posted above.
Good post. I chuckled. But I'll be honest for a bit..
We talked a lot about Coastal's offense wearing teams down. They run basically a triple option from the gun, just different variations. Seems like Leipold likes a one back and then a zone play to either side and the backs have the ability to pick a hole and go, but then it has a ton of action that goes with it. WR coming around for a fake reverse, playaction with a TE drag to other side, and so on.
But they wear teams down. They run it, a lot. That's their preference. 2020 they averaged 43 rushes per game compared to 22 passes. QB only had 7 TDs and 3 INTs in their 7 games. 2019 was even a greater disparity of 50 rushes per game and 21 passes per game. Even with all the "air it out" talk from 2018, they still had 42 rushes per game compared to 30 passes per game.
They are a 60/40 run to pass ratio. They wear teams out. But here's the difference between Les Miles wearing teams out and Lance Leipold. Leipold doesn't use a fullback. They do this in space. Les wanted a RB and a FB along with 2 TEs. Leipold wants to have multiple WRs on the field, but then run it down the defense's throat.

Also of big note, a guy rumored to leave was Kenny Logan. Just had a tweet today with a pic of him and Leipold in the complex and said "Let's rock and roll" That's a good sign. He's a leader of that defense.

Maybe it's already been discussed, but I can't believe Prox went to UTSA...I guess maybe there is more to his story than some pretend to know.

That he wasn't all that good..? A very average D1 football player. Nowhere near being a good LB in a P5. Big hitter, but slowwww. Like that they moved Betts to LB from safety. Betts was a slow safety, but bulked up and should be a decent slightly, undersized LB.

Dearmon was gonna get guys in space, too.
Doug Meacham and his perm were gonna spread it all over the field.
Then we threw the ball laterally for minimal gains, or ran up the middle for minimal gains, and then we punted.

Don't forget the false starts in punting situations. After a time out.

True. You're not wrong. Like 10 years ago, I was a big believer in doing a hurry up spread offense. Even probably 5 years ago. But as I get older and I realize what KU Football is like, you HAVE to slow it down and speed it up. Go both ways. You can't go petal to the floor all the time. Think Meacham got a raw deal because the QB play was awful and Beaty overstepped him.

I've been saying for years, we have to do something different from the pack.
If everyone's doing the same thing spread for example, and we basically have the last pick of spread QB and the linemen needed, etc. we're not going to be successful. So you do something else, and maybe the guys you get are still not 4* but they're the best in a given system, and then maybe you got something.
That's my hope with Leipold. Instead of getting the 10th best spread Qb to run the worst version of that offense in the conference, he can go get his guy and do his thing.
But if I see back to back automatic throws to the sideline behind the line of scrimmage, I'm coming to your house and I'm taking an upper-decker.

That is such bullshit. You know as well as I do that half of those screens were either knocked down, intercepted or thrown into open space. And you don't even mention the sacks. We had a carefully crafted glacial drop-back attack last year that netted close to a national record for yards lost on sacks, excluding the fumbles.

Okay then. As long as we agree that records were achievable.

Dajon Terry transferred out and is going to Tennessee. That’s good for him. Step up for sure. He would have played a ton though. And his position coach looking like he’s staying too. Definitely a tad odd, but oh well.
Bring some Buffalo guys over.

Now now, you mustn't disregard the multiple stupid procedure penalties and/or burned timeouts.

My biggest pet peeve, which seems to happen
all of the fucking time to us, is burning a timeout to avoid a delay penalty on, like, 3rd and 18.

Or, 4th and 3 from the opponent's 45. Burn a timeout, presumably to go for it and make sure you have the right play/personnel, only to punt. Had you taken the penalty, you probably don't even lose any field position on the punt, in fact, maybe you give your punter a little more room.

The 4th and 3 situation seems like the Beaty special. Except, it was often more like 4th and inches.
Can't risk going for it, too much to lose and all.

It was also, always, a very sad exhibition of a state of utter denial about what you had on the offensive side at the ball. 4th and short anywhere outside the shadow of your own goalposts might be one of the best opportunities you'd have all day.

I always like when the commentators say "Punting is the correct choice here, it tells his defense he trusts them." Wouldn't going for it at midfield also tell your defense you trust them to keep the other team out of the end zone if you don't convert?
