Ah, but is he there because of his basketball skills? Or his acting talents?

A college football player is getting over 2 million dollars to transfer to USC.
I think that's a sign of what its becoming.
https://247sports.com/college/usc/Board ... --3793625/
"The Daily article "Play for Pay" written by Lonnie White, revealed that he received $14,000 in different forms of "benefits" gained by selling season tickets while a wide receiver and special teams football player for USC in the 1980s. "
14k, when you're already at the school, is different, even with inflation, than 2 million, to entice a player to transfer to your school.
I never said it was perfect. I don't think guys like Frank Mason or Perry Ellis were getting 30k on the side every season under the table. Sorry, I don't. Were they getting hooked up with free gear and meals etc? Extra spending money besides the stipend? I'm sure.
I'm not a fan but that's like going 40 on the residential street with a 25 mph speed limit that probably should be 35.
But money in hand should not be used as a recruiting tactic, for guys who don't care about college, yes, the actual college and what comes with it, i.e. courses, being a part of the student body, or as a way to lure already committed players to new programs. I absolutely do not think it should.
That's like removing the speed limit on the street altogether.
So it's the amount you have a problem with and not the behavior. Got it.

I still think you should get a ticket for going 15 over.

Pdub wants kids to play sports at a certain college/university because they like the school. Not because they get money for going to that school. He doesn't want college athletes being payed money for playing sports.
It's a reasonable stance.
I think it's unrealistic because they've been getting improper benefits for decades. And I think it's unfair due to the amount of money generated for others (coaches/ADs making millions per year, etc).
But either stance is reasonable.

I want it closer to amateurism, which I get is not possible to truly get in this world at this point, than professionalism. That means totally re doing the model and getting a lot of the money out of the sport.
It’s racing towards professionalism.
I said I’d wait and see if NIL didn’t make it zoom towards professionalism and in a year, here we are, with college kids getting 2 million dollars to transfer.

It is definitely quite a bit crazier than I expected. Especially at places like Miami.

it’s not a reasonable stance when it’s unfair and exploitative of the athletes

I don’t think it’s unfair and exploitive to the majority of the athletes. And would extend to an even greater range of these athletes if some of the money was moved out of the sport.
For those that it is unfair and unreasonable because of their clear talents and earning potential as future pro athletes, find another venue to start your career.

Nobody is forced to play college athletics. It is a choice.
And I am fine with NIL.
But the point is valid.

Correct.
I’d argue if you were a wizard in a field before you were 18 that you might not want to bother with college at all.
( some might argue not to even bother with college even if you aren’t )

This is a transparent attempt to skirt NIL rules, and I for one am deeply disturbed.

Money for good grades? How much do regular students get? I might have been more focused on school if I were getting paid.

Better method than what we have now.
The end of my freshman year I got a check from KU for over the limit scholarships.

I'd prefer athletes be treated like regular students.

I was paid for how well I did in school, albeit not nearly that much ( and in theory that was just reimbursing for room/board ).
And on that note, I was definitely paid for how well I did in school, with scholarships, ie didn’t have to pay for class.
