related, apparently the UNC professor that spear-headed the 1619 project was denied tenure seemingly because of that work
instead, rather than actually vote on tenure, the board of trustees offered her a 5 year, fixed term contract
she was hired as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, a post for which previous professionals have been hired with tenure

so they put up a George Floyd statue in Brooklyn on Juneteenth.
It took all of 5 days before a bunch of white assholes went and vandalized it with some white supremacist website.
Hey lobster, what’s patriotfront.us?

What are people going to accept as fair punishment?
My guess is nothing short of electric chair or life in prison...which i am pretty sure aren't even on the table. Likely be a tense afternoon.

Not sure, no matter what it is, some will not be happy.
Hopefully, something more that time served and probation. which is what the defense is asking for.

That might be too optimistic

It would be unusual for him to be sentenced long term.
After all, it was only a murder.

Let’s not forget he’s also facing federal civil rights charges

I said in this thread like 12-18 years. Can't completely remember why, and a little bit of a cop-out answer, but I'll stick with it.

Last week I had the great opportunity to attend a panel discussion with some of the top civil rights leaders and criminal defense attorneys in the country. Way too much information to go into all of it, but for the most part, there was a consensus that the Chauvin trial was pretty clean.
One issue, though, was that all 17(?) of Chauvin's prior violations for excessive force were excluded from evidence. And, that's pretty understandable given the rules of evidence and how they differ state to state. However, as the criminal defenders pointed out, most places in this country judges are allowing a whole host of prior bad acts committed by non-cop defendants into evidence. That's where the "two systems" narrative has legs.

Regarding that -
Why were Chauvin’s prior violations excluded, but Floyd’s prior drug use was fair game?

No one should touch it or vandalize it. Ill be clear on that.
But, what did Floyd do to earn a statue besides get killed by a racist cop? He wasnt exactly a pillar of the community or a great role model as far as Ive read.
And Certainly wasnt a part of the Brooklyn community.

I did not follow the actual trial closely at all--just not my thing.
In general, though, prior bad acts of a defendant are usually seen as more prejudicial than probative--for the most part, something someone did years before the charged crime has no probative value to prove the elements.
As for Floyd's drug use, again guessing b/c I didn't follow, but perhaps the defense was using it as part of their theory on cause of death. His tox would be relevant to that issue.

why do you care? or, why do you have a problem with it?
