I watched Hereditary! It was the last movie in the triple feature at the drivein. I had no idea what it was when we started watching it.

Hereditary was tops.
Some good Halloween/scary movies have come out recently - A Quiet Place also among them. The It remake. Get Out if you count that.
My top 5 probably are a mix match of these:
Alien, The Shining, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing.

I liked The Conjuring series. I haven’t had a chance to see any of the spin offs but I don’t think they are doing as well.

I agree. The first Conjuring was very good. And Hereditary was disgustingly enjoyable.

OKAY. I've given this some thought. Heavy thought. Super smart thought, too.
Top four, from lightly humorous, to darkly scary:
Killer High
Evil Dead 2
Sixth Sense
Blair Witch Project*
*not a pop pick, but scared the dogsh*t outta this guy

Ohh Blair witch! That came out when I was in junior high and it scared the eff out of everybody.
In college my roommate wrote some big essay about Scream. While all the classic slasher movies feature an identified villain external to the social circle, Scream was innovative in that no one knows who the villain is and everybody suspects everybody. Or something.
I remember getting super spooked one night up late watching tv by myself and some movie came on with a scary flying scarecrow thing. I think it was jeepers creepers?

I might have to watch Hereditary Halloween night, haven't seen it yet.
A few other good ones are:
28 Days Later
Dawn of the Dead
The Ring
It Follows
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Paranormal Activity

yep, jeepers creepers.
Same kinda thing happened to me when I was young. Watching a scary movie, rest of the fam goes out to eat. Got dark. Movie ends, I go upstairs, flip on a light & catch my reflection in a window. Lived & died in two seconds flat.
"The Other".

The Shining (original)
Halloween (original)
Conjuring 1 and 2 (pretty good)
Insidious 1 and 2 (pretty good)
Creepshow 1 and 2
BTW, the sequel to the Shining (book) is complete shit. Look for that shitty movie in the future...

My 2 year old suddenly thinks Moana and Zootopia are "scary".
That's after requesting to watch Zootopia every single morning for much of the last year. Smh.
