Yes, but in Utah, where we might expect that to have been the LDS church, it was not, at its inception.
Many Morman’s protested the Utah bill as it was an ‘attack’ on their rights to polygamous relationships.

The cul-de-sac we lived at in KC was about half Mormon. Very nice folks and not crazy at all.

the religious beliefs are a little crazy, but they are by far the nicest, least judgmental religious group that i’ve interacted with

Probably not a single religion in the world that isn't bat shit crazy. Well, maybe the religion isn't as crazy as those who allow themselves to believe the fairly tales the religion's teachings brainwash them with.
I will never doubt the POWER of religion/s. It's frightening to me.
