grew up in rodeo (and 4-H), and i largely still not taking it in

the exception is the roping...to each his own, but imo it’s a cruelty to the calves

used to love watching the kids compete in mutton busting and greased pig chases. cousin road broncs in college, unm i think. i road barrels and poles for a few years.

are the brazilians still taking over the bull-riding?

Brazilians are still fantastic riders and there are several in the top 15 but there has been a bit of an American resurgence the last couple years. Sage kimzey, jess lockwood, daylon swearingen, colton Jesse, derek kolbaba, cole melancon. Some damn good American riders right now. USA won the PBR global cup this year (kike the bull riding Olympics) after brazil went back to back.

i said my peace on calf roping

i’ll agree that the rigs used for broncs and bulls are likely uncomfortable/painful to the animals, but they are temporary and, to my knowledge, don’t do permanent damage

i’ll also say that, at least for championship bulls, they are treated better than 99% of domestic cattle

if you’re going to chastise, i hope you’re either vegan, or incredibly diligent about knowing the source/s of the meat you consume. the animals that go into commercial meat consumption are in much worse situations than those in rodeos

Perhaps you should educate yourself a little bit more about rodeo. The participants and the stock contractors care more about those animals than most people.

Working a mounted shooting event today. Single action colt, shooting off horseback. Pretty cool shit. Never seen it before, interesting. These horses are so damn disciplined.

Actually most of these guys arent whipping their horses. There are other ways. Takes patience but it is a better and more consistent result in the long run.

This guy has a great series on a more reasonable approach.
