The Japhy Challenge

I’m lookin at you Leawood.

So not everyone can do this, but if you can at some level, pretty sure it will help a faction of Americans who will take a rough hit over the next couple of months. All of my favorite restaurants around my office are closed for the foreseeable future; but I was inundated with email notices last night that screamed, “We are open for carry out, please stop by!”. Most of the staff in these places are my daughters ages, so I have a good idea of the fear they are experiencing and there is a lot of anxiety out there right now.

So starting tomorrow I will begin ordering carry out for the foreseeable future for lunch. When I pick up my order, I will leave behind a $50 bill for every worker who is there in the restaurant working that day. The most desperate will be working because they can’t afford to take a day off. Being as it is all carry out right now, there will be a lot of shitty tippers, ( you know who you are motherfuckers ), who will be stiffing them or shorting and the workers will have to pay taxes on 8% of the orders whether they get tipped or not. I am hoping that I cover for you assholes as well as there being some left over so the workers can take a little extra tax free cash home.

If by some chance we actually get checks from the government as cash infusions, Annie and I will be spending all of that money in this way as well.

Carry on….

I agree with the premise, and also with buying gift cards now for using later, to keep cash flow now.

I'm inspired. Will get a couple from a couple local places tonight.

It's a great idea - for those that can afford it. If you can, go for it.

And if, for some reason the big-bad government comes through with the goods and kicks off our long, slow decline into socialism, I would ask that people pull out the first hundo and set it aside for a gift certificate from your locally owned business. Win-win-win!

Us poor people will still be way ahead of the game. We all know Sean Hannity, Laura Ingrahm, Rush Limbaugh, Tucker Carlson, the cast of Fox and Friends, Britt Hume and Michelle Malkin will refuse it.

A fly fishing outfitter one county over announced that the local gummint is forcing them to close shop, but in the meantime, 30% of all their online sales will be distributed to support their full time staff. I’m impressed.

I'll just point out one little thing and then acknowledge that this is the wrong bored: the reason that you DON'T want a government that routinely spends $5 trillion but only collects $4 trillion is so that in case of emergency -- war, plague, whatever -- you have a little cushion.

and that assumes that the cushion is, in fact, kept as a cushion and not “re-invested” to do thinks like buy back stocks

(and yes, i know that wasn’t the gov’t that did that)

there was a story on public radio months ago about how very few businesses, let alone governments, have anyone on board that actually does future planning...be it for climate change, massive population/demographic changes, or really anything that would ultimately disrupt the status quo

(and by future, i mean decades, not years)

as of right now the only reason I’d buy anything from a restaurant is cuz y’all looted the grocery store. I mean shit, not a single ingredient left for a taco nor an enchilada?

But yea, if I do do carry out, l’ll tip well...

...unless it’s a Sunday and 99 is working.

The initial 8% premise is flawed. Any restaurant that makes servers/staff ring food on their card/number/is and assigns those sales to the employee in the form described are breaking the law. The employees should have cried foul from day one.

Boy, I sure hope an emergency doesn't happen any time soon. Sigh. Well, at least we can all rest easy that the uber wealthy in this country got their tax cut already.

If that has changed that is great, in the past my understanding was if there was no tip added to a credit card then the assumption was an 8% minimum was added for cash tip to each member of wait staff and this was used to calculate tax withholdings regardless of what they filed for tips at end of shift. During the recession my wife was working as a waitress when I met her and she was getting this withheld at the restaurant she worked at on the Plaza. They were told it was an IRS directive. So any time she did not get a tip on the credit card she got taxes withheld to account for 8% min of the check as if it was tip income. If over time she got more than the 8% and didn't report it all, she could balance it out. But during the recession there were a lot of cheap ass people eating out and stiffing the wait staff. There were times when the staff did not get 8% overall in tips and they had taxes withheld on income they did not receive.

It's been a while since I've been in the biz, but at that time you were required to claim at least 8% of your sales. If you claimed lower than that it was a red flag for the IRS.

Of coarse there is a record of credit card tips, so you had to claim all of those. If you only claimed the amount equal to credit card tips, that was another red flag.

I used to claim all credit card tips plus about half the cash I made for the few years I waited tables (I'm well beyond the statute of limitations).

Ordering from Michael Corvino tonight, you know him DC?

Howard Hanna is doing a community kitchen with the time off. Taking donations from businesses and people, making to go meals for whoever needs a meal, no questions asked or payment required. Wouldn't expect less from him.

Sorry, when I wrote DC, I meant 99. My mistake.

This city is oddly provincial most of the time, but really take care of each other in times of need.

Ordering a lot of takeout this week. Someone losing their job over this induces a lot of sadness and anger.

That was sorta the point. A rainy day fund must be built before the deluge.
