Any HVAC Guys Here?

Post by jhawks99 »

Just had our AC/Heat thingie inspected. All seems pretty well. Except for one thing. We have some fungusie/algaeie/moldie stuff growing in the unit. I saw it, spotty black stuff growing on the insulation/wiring. Not a ton but enough to worry me.

Their solution is a UV light installed in the unit @ a little over 500$.

I'm wondering if there's some spray fungicide that I can hit it with or something to I'm not out 5 bills$.

10% bleach should do the trick. Spray it on the fungus to saturate it, let it stand 10 minutes, wipe clean, then probably repeat it just to be sure.

I don't know shit about HVAC, but I know how to kill microorganisms.

that was my first thought as well, but i wasn’t sure how the bleach would affect the surface of wherever it’s being applied

Yeah, if that's an issue, you could also go with vinegar which is much gentler, but I don't know if it would work as well. Or, 70% Rubbing alcohol, or 3% Hydrogen peroxide.

They key is to saturate it. and let it stand.

Do you have a whole house humidifier? I've heard those can get moldy if not properly cleaned or filters not replaced regularly.

No humidifier in the house.
I'll try the bleach thing. There's some wiring in there that I need to be careful of. Other than that, it's just insulation.

Thanks for your response.
