Goodbye Les, we hardly knew ye...

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas and Les Miles have mutually agreed to part ways effective immediately. Terms of the agreement will be released in the coming days. While a national search for a new head coach begins immediately, Mike DeBord will continue to serve as the acting head coach until an interim head coach is determined.

Statement from Director of Athletics Jeff Long:
“I am extremely disappointed for our university, fans and everyone involved with our football program. There is a lot of young talent on this football team, and I have no doubt we will identify the right individual to lead this program. We will begin the search for a new head coach immediately with an outside firm to assist in this process. We need to win football games, and that is exactly what we’re going to do.”

Statement from Former Head Football Coach Les Miles:
“This is certainly a difficult day for me and for my family. I love this university and the young men in our football program. I have truly enjoyed being the head coach at KU and know that it is in a better place now than when I arrived. To our student-athletes, I want you to remember that you came to play for KU and earn a degree here. So, I implore you to stay and build on what we started and do all of the things we talked about doing together. There is a bright future for all of you and for KU Football.”

Likely means a buyout, no suit clause, and confidentiality. Mangino-y.

This tells me KU and Long didn’t know.

Who the hell takes this job? Literally Jason Sudeikis in character as Ted Lasso?

Man, this stinks. I thought recruiting was heading in the right direction. I hope that this coaching hire doesn't get screwed up.

I tend to disagree. Hush money and moving on.

What they should have said....

Statement from Director of Athletics Jeff Long:
“I am an extremely incompetent putz and I feel bad for our university, fans and everyone involved with our football program because you're stuck with me. At least for a while. There really is not a lot of young talent on this football team that proved it by going winless last season, and I have no doubt I will not be able to identify the right individual to lead this program. I will begin the search for a new head coach immediately and I will start in my asshole, with an outside firm to assist in this process.
We need to win football games, and that is exactly what we’re going to do. When? I don't know. Perhaps after I leave and am fired.”

Statement from Former Head Football Coach Les Miles:
“This is certainly a great day for me and for my family. I didn't really like this university compared to LSU and the young men in our football program were losers because me and my staff sucked. I have truly hated being the head coach at KU and going winless last season, and I know that the program is in the same place now, if not worse, as when I arrived. To our student-athletes, I want you to remember that you came to play for KU and get drunk and high and bang coeds here. So, I implore you to stay and build on what we started and do all of the things we talked about doing together. Especially the banging the hot coeds. There is a dim future for all of you and for KU Football.”

More truthful now?

How does Long not know or at least assume he's a dead man as far as his future at KU?
Girod has his hands tied. No matter what he does, he will rightfully be criticized.

We could always hire you know who, who just signed on to coach Lawrence High. 😂

Glass half full: the roster really is in better shape than 2 years ago.

But you have to be very concerned about defections. Emmett Jones to HC might actually be one of the better options.

Maybe even in an interim "prove it" year.

It also kicks the can down the road on Long. You can't just fire Long right now without thinking about the NCAA hoops investigation.

You're at the complete wrong time of the calendar for a hire. I'm totally on board with an interim who can keep what recruits can be kept, and reassess when the carousel spins next winter.

Kane seems like about the level we are looking at.

But, even with Kane, why would he take a job that can completely dim his rising star?
