its almost as if division and panic sells.....maybe we should just turn it all off and go back to living and basing our decisions and needs and anger off things that are actually in our lives and communities

I’m leery of any concentration of disproportionate power, whether it’s gummint, or corporations.

A for-profit corporation controlling “both sides” of the media narrative is an awful lot of influence.

Yea and division and panic sells, but it’s not necessarily as simple as turning it off. Local community news outlets aren’t exactly thriving.

Now somebody gimme the Qusdahl meter.

Right now I have a ton to worry about to get ready for winter.

why would I waste 1 second watching blathering news people choke on each others dramatized opinions and whip each other into yelling piles of filth while the viewers, frothing at the mouth, eat it all up?

how does that put wood in the stove or meat in the fridge or money in the bank?

new has become unwatchable and basically is worthless.

Yea, I don’t watch cable news either way. Not since the Fox and Friends thread, at least.

But I’m also thinking in some macro. A person can turn off a teevee. But people may be more influenced by media either way.

And it’s not quite as simple as McDonald’s out competing the mom and pop burger joint. It’s the commodification of information itself.

How many OAN viewers do you think stop and consider they’re believing shit from the same company trying to sell them CNN? And vice versa.

At the end of the day, what’s the difference between state propaganda, and corporate propaganda?

not sure theres much of a difference...those lines are fairly well blurred with the amount of money being pushed thru lobbies and lining politicians pockets.

there was a guy here once that said something along the lines of burn it all down.

sounds reasonable.

There's a massive difference between corporate media and government controlled media, yes.

If you were arguing anti-trust laws need to be stronger or better enforced that's one thing. But to compare the current situation to countries that don't have a free press is misguided.

What’s the massive difference?

I’m sure there is one.

But also, there’s the similarities of one side with disproportionate power and influence getting to tell you whatever narrative they want.

I guess a state is trying to advance the state agenda, while a corporation is mostly just going for profits. But if, say, atnt is in cahoots with the military-industrial complex, who (again for profits) decides we need another war, what’s to stop OAN and CNN from beating that drum?

And yeah I guess there’s some free market argument like, but consumers can just go get their news elsewhere. But I dunno how many OAN viewers will even make the connection that it’s the same parent company as CNN, much less change their consumption habits cuz of it.

And while it’s not true state propaganda, when you consider how influential corporations are in gummint matters, that line may be a little blurred.

Single source of truth/power.

Sorta right, except the state isn't trying to advance the state agenda for the most part. It's just a collection of people, mostly just trying to get reelected, some trying to do something about having a legacy.
But if, say, atnt is in cahoots with the military-industrial complex, who (again for profits) decides we need another war, what’s to stop OAN and CNN from beating that drum?
I don't understand how that would work logistically. These are public companies that show public financials. You think they'd risk all their viewership on something that would easily be brought to light if it was so lucrative that they would take said risk?
And yeah I guess there’s some free market argument like, but consumers can just go get their news elsewhere. But I dunno how many OAN viewers will even make the connection that it’s the same parent company as CNN, much less change their consumption habits cuz of it.

A little? Sure. As opposed to state controlled media, which would be a lack of a line altogether.
