Sometimes there is a difference between IN the ground and ON the ground but to answer your question....
I know you are referring to during a Football game but other options during other sports and situations could be - On the floor, in his mouth, in someone's ass, in the air, in the water/pool/lake/ocean, on a/the foot rest/ottoman, on the table, in his shoe, in the sand, in the shower/bathtub/whirlpool, etc.

The thing I sometimes remind myself when I feel announcers are stating the obvious is that there are blind people who listen to the games on TV.

at KU approximately 47 years.
