Recruiting

Post by DeletedUser »

It's spilled over into the other thread but....

Our only top 100 recruits in 2019 were Jalen Wilson (great) and Tristan Enaruna.

Our only top 100 recruit in 2020 was Bryce Thompson.

In 2021 our only recruit in the top 75 was Clemence.

In 2022 Gradey at #21 is our biggest get in recent memory. Then Udeh and Rice at 32 and 37. Zuby at 47. They're all gone.

That's just not going to get it done.

30. Labaron philon (pg)
36. Rakease passmore (wing)

That's off espn bb recruiting rankings

A center who might never step foot on campus if HD returns and 2 more 30+ ranked recruits who can't shoot.

We better get this adidas kid that backed out on Indiana. And/Or we better offer Furphy some serious cash to stay in "school".

And thank god we did. Got an easy road (finally) with some luck within the brackets. Beat a 16, 9, 4, 10, 2, 8.

That was the senior class that had:

13 Grimes
21 Dotson
40 McCormack

That team also had 3 guys currently playing in the NBA. Och CB and JW, of the 3, Och and CB seem extremely likely to stick for 10+ years, and JW has done better than I expected. Mixed with "program guys" like DMac DH and Lightfoot. Plus high end transfer Remy.

Not highly.

But they developed into NBA caliber talent.

Our best teams have some high end talent that is NBA caliber.

Maybe you should become a Rutgers fan. Clearly the program of the future. Self can't recruit anymore time to jump the sinking ship

Are you saying you're fine with our recruiting results the last 3 or 4 years that I provided above?

Ochai was ranked like 300+
Braun was a lower ranked 4 star

Just another example that recruiting ranking mean jack shit. What does matter is finding guys who fit your system and developing them

Well considering we won a title and the what could have been year of 2020, I don't think we should feel too down about things

I mean, sure they (the rankings themselves) don't "matter".

Getting good players is what matters. And we haven't been doing that as much the last 3-4 years.

I've seen a lot of bitching about our roster and players lately for suddenly our recruiting and roster management not to be a glaring issue.

Players ranked in the top 25 incoming freshman this year and their projected draft spot (if 1st round):

Ron Holland (G league ignite) ranked #1 on 247. Projected 4th pick in NBA draft

Isaiah Collier (USC) ranked #2 on 247. Projected 12th pick in the NBA draft.

Cody Williams (Colorado) ranked #4 on 247. Projected 8th pick in the NBA draft.

Matas Buzelis (g league ignite) ranked #7 on 247. Projected 5th pick in the NBA draft.

Rob Dillingham (Kentucky) ranked #21 on 247. Projected 7th pick in the NBA draft.

Ja'Kobe Walker (Baylor) ranked #8 on 247. Projected 15th pick in the NBA draft.

(No underlying point to this post, just a summary of top 25 guys from last class and where they're projecting)

Illy can speak for himself, but I’m not getting (from his posts) that it’s simply that we need OAD players.

It’s that we need more talent, across the spectrum of recruiting archetypes.

Honestly, from a signing standpoint (retention being another thing altogether), it should really look like last year’s class (two high-end wings, one high-ceiling big, one high-floor big), plus a PG. Maybe go for a developmental G/W instead of Rice?

But what talented PG was going to sign here with Harris having nine years of eligibility left?

I want the best team possible. Every year.

The last 2-3 years the roster building/GM portion of the job has not been elite by Self imo.

We had Kj at the 5 last year, which severely limited our ceiling. Unacceptable.

We have whatever this year is. Unacceptable.

I am fine with falling in love with DH and Kj and having them be multi year starters. Program guys. But you've got to put talent around them to be legit contenders with those 2 playing 33mpg.

Our recruiting (and retention of that talent) has fallen off.

Our player development is still elite.

Yes. Doesn't have to be freshman one and dones.

But, Remy was one and done. Timberlake one and done. KM wanted to be one and done. HD wants to be 1 and done. Furphy is going to be one and done.

And then you have all the one and done transfers. Rice Udeh Zuby Pettiford etc. Wasted years.

And the zero and done guys who never played or contributed. Kyle Cuffe. Marcus Adams Jr. Arterio Morris. Isaac McBride. Wasted scholarships. And when/if they commit early they also take spots where it entices recruits to go elsewhere.

We have good players. 2 all Americans, the best pure pg in college. KJ is a very good college player, and furphy is a lottery pick. We were preseason #1 and I often hear people say we have the best starting 5 in college. Our recruiting isn't as bad as you guys are making it sound

I truly beleive our starters were the problem this year. They played most the minutes, they were the ones getting beat. Not cause they aren't good players, but because then pieces just don't fit together very well.

I don't think I ever remember having a collection of talented college players like this with so many major limitations
