I've always thought the final verse of the Star Spangled Banner is better than the first, or at least a very good occasional change-up (even though my preference would be to not Jesus things up in the first place):

2. I disagree. The Star Spangled Banner is a difficult song musically, but the lyrics (compared to those proposed) are not bad. It is just an ode to the flag, and the 'land of the free and home of the braves' chorus is a nice sentiment. The song the Star Spangled Banner replaced, Hail Columbia, probably has the better lyrics.
