nobody cares really so ill throw it on the board no one reads....but ..I just got exclusive access to trap a stretch of private ranch land that's 5600 acres....

that's exciting for a weirdo like me. Now I gotta explain to the wife why I need a few hundred dollars more in traps and bait and lure etc to get geared up. And why I'm gonna be up and outta the house before 4 every other day lol.

Maybe I can sweet talk myself into a 4 wheeler too ha!

Is trapping a sport?

what do you want? the quills? I can probably get one....not in a trap but i find them from time to time.

100lbs of new traps showing up tomorrow. Running low on time to get a good rust on them and get them,boiled, dyed, and waxed before prime time.

Nearly everything I know about trapping, I learned from Life Below Zero.

Tom Oar from Mountain Men....and Marty are better sources if you go the TV route. Tom Oar is a badass.

Ed Schneider from Auburn, Kansas has some good video content on Coyote trapping and has some good baits and lures etc. I've actually been meaning to buy one of his Kansas Trapping tshirts or sweatshirts but they're never in stock.

Eat em? Take the fur to market?

and if I recall, you can really only trap during the colder months, right?

no i don't eat badgers and coyotes.....


fur bearers season around here is Nov 15 to mar 15

but there's no season on coyotes, they're fair game all year for hunting and traps for them are OK all year on private ground.

you can only keep the fur in cold months...when its too warm then pelt is what they call "in the blue". It had a bluish tint to the hide when skinned and when you tan it the fur will fall out rendering the pelt worthless.


if I got enough pelts or if I get a bobcats etc I'd take them to a fur buyer...theres a rendezvous in bend and one in Idaho.

Most usually I keep the pelts and then when I have enough make things with them. Most guys around here don't do anything with them unless theybhave a pile of them. They're only worth $30-$50 in good condition.

Is there a way to target a trap for a specific animal?

What if you accidentally get some animal you don't intend to get, or is out of season or not a legal furbearer or something?

30-50 bucks a pop almost doesn't seem like it's worth the effort, like if you wanted to make things with pelts just drop a few bucks on them instead of bothering to trap and skin and tan them yourself, except that I bet it can be enjoyable to do.

you target with lures and bait and teap size and trap set up and location.

You can release the animal if you want to, the jaws are offset and have to be checked every 48 hrs so it doesn't kill them *unless you use snares or conibears* But it's can be a challenge releasing a pissed off animal trying to attack you as you set it free.

This day in age you don't trap for the money (unless you're a contract trapper). It's enjoyable, and, in my case it's predator control. We are overrun with coyotes and they're killing everything from pets to deer.

$30-$50 is what the trapper gets. if you want to go buy a pelt it's significantly more expensive.

oh, so there are retail vendors.

I've seen trappers approach animals with a sheet of plywood used as a shield that with a notch cut in the bottom just big enough to put over a trapped paw. Lets em free the paw without getting mauled by the rest of the animal.

I can only imagine even a nonlethal trap might still injure an animal, and certainly stress them out regardless.

I didn't think of predator control, that's a good reason too. I saw somewhere that despite the constant expansion of civilization in the US and the ongoing attempts to rid them, coyotes are thriving anyway. Like population maybe even bigger than before humans got here. Very adaptable. I've seen em in urban San Francisco.
