America Failed
America Failed
Not that I didn’t see this coming.
I think Christian white people - largely men - ( yes Trump gained some of the Latino vote - again largely men - but Harris still won the majority ) were concerned about their role in society and felt abandoned/attacked. They were also not happy with the recovery of the economy, specifically their individual purchasing power, after the pandemic.
I think Democrats can take part of the blame here for not being realistic with the health of their candidate earlier.
The failure isn’t how they felt per se—it is the candidate that they stood behind. He is the embodiment of the worst of this country. A cheater. A bigot. A sore looser. A liar. A man solely out for his money and his ego. And a man who at best riled up his base after he lost in 20 just enough to cause something he didn’t intend and, at worst, was trying with everything he had to overturn the Democratic process.
He conned the people yet again with promises he can fix things. He will try his best to give tax breaks to the wealthy. He will try his best to institute tariffs. And deport immigrants. And absolve himself of crimes or misconduct. It remains to be seen if any of that will actually work in any positive way.
I’m doubting it.
Fucking shameful.

Re: America Failed
Very surprised to see Trump do so well compared to 2020 with some key segments:
1. First time voters
2. Voters between 18-29.
3. Hispanic/Latino voters.
4. Black men voters.
Going to be another long 4 years, with a lot of unhappy people.
Biden not dropping out until the house was already on fire didn't help.

Re: America Failed
Non college educated men is where he gained the most traction. This included a large jump in non college educated Latino men.
I do think a good percentage of these voters simply aren’t ready for a female president.

To celebrate out accomplishment of being crowned the Dumbest Country in the World, we are going to dismantle the Department of Education so that no one can ever wrestle the crown away from us.

Re: America Failed
Dems need a new playbook for 2028. Telling half (or more?) of the country how stupid they are isn't winning them any votes.
I also don't think the anti Christian stuff plays well in the black and Hispanic communities that are notoriously religious segments of their target voters.
The abortion issue was huge (and should be), but only a few of the swing states that mattered most have extremely restrictive abortion laws in place. Which hurt them in the end I think.

Fuck it.
I'm just gonna be here for a good time, not a long time, except this isn't even a good time.
Not gonna make a habit of the pols bored long term, but in the wake of the election, let's chat. And if anyone tries to be anything less than civil, prepare to be ridiculed for such needledickery.
Where are you seeing that illy? (Your list of key segments)
About a month ago NPR had a story like, "Kamala struggling to hold support among African American voters." I was like, shit, that's a demographic that Dems are supposed to carry, and that Trump won all of like 8% fucking percent in previous elections.
Hispanic/Latino is wild too. Then again, I don't think it was a great idea for Kamala to make a hard right turn on the border and basically adopt Trump's talking points on the wall and referring to immigrants as thugs.
Muslim voters too...tho that's understandable why Biden/Harris lost so much of their support. But also LESS understandable considering Trump fucking banned them from entering the country. Maybe it's a testament to voters having such a short memory. Either way, dunno if that's a particularly large voter demographic.
What IS particularly large is the younger vote. I dunno if Kamala really did much of all to appeal to the keeds. And if you're a 18-29 Gen Z or whatever, I dunno if it's a particularly optimistic time to be entering adulthood, let alone sign your own name.
I think the single biggest issue in this election, is the biggest in every election:
The economy, stoopid!
I'm afraid a lot of Americans are feeling the pinch. As veep of the admin Kamala basically owned Bidenflation, but rather than actually offer actual platform ideas to actually ease things, they gaslit. "Actually the economy's doing great and you're just dum!"
Leave it to Dems to piss this one down their legs. Somebody shoulda told Biden to step down months, years, before he got up there and shits his britches at the debate. More generally, Dems shoulda had the goddamn sense to be coaching up some actually viable candidates in their bullpen.
Also generally, I just wasn't a fan of the whole strategy to appeal far more to "moderates" and centrist pubs more so than actually appealing to younger, of-color, progressive types; even practically turning their backs on those types. And, gee, look what happened! PS, heads up, getting endorsed by folks like the Cheneys is not something to be proud of.
This shoulda been the sports proverbial breakaway dunk, 1st and goal, tap-in putt, of an easy W, and yet...

Re: America Failed
I don’t think this result really says anything about the Ds or their candidates.
I think the election was a mirror, and the reflection showed more people that think one way than people that think another way.
Because I am a person that thinks that other way, I think this is the wrong result.
But, it’s the result.

Re: America Failed
yea...sigh.
Kamala was way too Hillary for her own good. Unlikable, un-relatable, just not someone who passed the "sit down and get a beer or 15 with" test.
It sucks, but America is still a very patriarchal place. A very racist place too. And, when it came down to a woman of color up against a patriarchal racist, well...

Re: America Failed
They just showed it on TV. Harris underperformed those segments in relation to Biden in 2020.
Immigrants that have come here legally aren't a fan of illegal immigration. I don't think it was her flipping her stance on the border that hurt her with this demographic.
I don't think this was ever a breakaway dunk/tap in/easy W.

Not wanting lower taxes or smaller government or border control or affordable groceries or protections of religion isn’t a problem.
It’s the person they selected to hold that torch and the either head in the sand ignorance or abandonment of reality that it took to be behind him.

If the economy was the biggest issue, this one wasn't far behind.DeletedUser wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 5:57 am

Dems have been campaigning on "ensuring reproductive rights" for years now. But it's been so little more than a carrot-on-a-stick for election season.
Then, when Roe gets gutted during a Democratic administration, they don't do shit to counter it...beyond the same hollow "vote for us cuz we're giving lip service to reproductive rights!"
And, yes, I realize Roe got gutted most directly cuz of a Trump-stacked court. But still, the move was there for Dems. They coulda campaigned on what they DID do for it, but instead they just campaigne again on what they swear they're gonna do if you just give them a vote, no for real this time.
Re: America Failed
It’s also immigrants that came here illegally but now are legal.
Re: America Failed
the breakaway dunk was being up against Trump, again, but now with how many felony convictions and pending legal proceedings and other shit on his rap sheet yet.DeletedUser wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 6:05 am

not to mention being the kooky old candidate - a point dems effectively conceded by propping Biden up until it was too late anyway.
What a horrible awful candidate!
It should not have been difficult to beat MAGA. I think the play book should have been to gain support among younger and of-color voters, rather than somehow loose it.
Re: America Failed
Sure. No disagreement.
But I guess what I’m saying is - I don’t think there was, as a 2024 campaign matter, a policy or candidate choice that would have led to a different result here.
Re: America Failed
I do…if combined with Biden realizing he wasn’t fit for a second term.

Re: America Failed
Sensible humble perspective on why trump was elected:
Re: America Failed
Tell it to someone who cares.
We don’t.
Re: America Failed
I dunno, I think Trump was a shitty candidate, who likely would have been defeated by any other less shitty candidate. The prob was, Biden, and Kamala - particularly 11th hour Kamala - were both shitty too.jfish26 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 6:20 amSure. No disagreement.

Give us someone with a scintilla of charisma and it's a W. But it's crazy dems would not, or could not, produce one.
I also think there are plenty of policy issues that could have been played differently, perhaps even to a different election outcome. But with that said, Americans are notoriously not well-versed on actual policy issues. Was that your point? Candidates are little more than celebrities, and elections come far more down to a sort of popularity contest, hence the aforesaid point on charisma.
Heck, plot twist! Watch Trump repeal the 22nd only to then get his ass kicked in 28 by Obama.
