this thread was gonna be about some of my favorite dive bars into which I went on a recent road trip.

oh! and also some choice breakfast spots.

That reminds me...is there anything else that went up in price as quickly as a diner breakfast?

It seems like most places used to have the standard issue eggs potatoes toast and your choice of bacon or sausage for like under ten bucks. Now any more it's in the $14+ range. And if you might as well finance it if you wanna do something crazy like get chicken fried steak.

As obnoxious as GF is and as bad as his restaurants are, I still like the show. Mostly.

Reminds me that a couple of weeks ago, I hit up a local DDD joint. A truck stop close to my house. Had all the green flags for a quality greasy breakfast. Industrial area off the interstate and Mississippi river. Gravel parking lot. Mostly dead neon sign. Looked like a great spot for B&Gs.

I sit down, get a pretty good cuppa joe. Ancient, surly waitress asks me what I want. 99: "How about the B&Gs with two eggs scrambled?"
ASW: "How bout not. We ain't got 'em. New owners are taking over next week."
99: "OK, chicken fried steak and eggs?"
ASW: "Nope, we ain't got that either.... wait, I think there's still one."
99: "Uhhmmmm no, I don't want the last CFS, Breakfast skillet thingie with chorizo?"
ASW: "Yeah, we got that"
99 thinks to himself if 3rd party: "99, you should just pay for the coffee, leave a nice tip and head on down the road."

Breakfast skillet thingie was awful, and 99 should have listened to himself.
