I would agree it is 5th best, but that just feels like such shaky ground when the entire trend has been towards the 4 major "regional" conferences leaving NCAA and doing their own thing.
I agree. Big10 would be great. I hope it happens, but I am not holding my breath.

In the mean time I will be excited for our new additions because that's the situation we are in.
KUAI, though, should and are doing what it can to be in the best conference possible.
Agreed. And I think they are doing just that by being involved in adding some really good programs to the Big12.

Until we get an invite to the Big10 SEC Pac12 or ACC, the Big12 is the best conference possible for us.

You should do whatever you want. KUAI, though, should and are doing what it can to be in the best conference possible.
If we’re going to be stuck in the trash bin why not go independent?

I am sure for some it's about $$$. And little to do with quality of the programs.
No doubt it is for some.

We could only afford to do that in basketball, and it would have to be a hell of a tv contract for the math to make sense.

Apparently, even Notre Dame doesn't think that model can last into the future.

based on the capital one cup standings as of 04-05-22:

BIG 12 rankings - mens

3. KANSAS
13. tejass
18. cincy
22. ok st
23. baylor
33. iowa st
33. houston
39. west virginia
63. byu
67. okla
79. tcu

at the very worst subtracting those 2 and adding those 4 is a wash. at best we got a little better on field performance.

Given 110 years, why shouldn't basketball be the focus of KU's conference?

Ohio State AD on the radio today.

KU needs to spend whatever it has to spend and break whatever alliance or contract it needs to not get left out.

"We [can] create our own rules, create our own governance structure, have our own enforcement, we have our own requirements, whatever that might be," Smith said. " ... That might be in the medical space, for example, if a student-athlete is injured and hurt in his or her senior year. You take care of them when they're done until they're healed. And we have the funding in place to do that. You don't touch anything else with the NCAA. You keep the academic requirements in place. The reality is, those schools who offer 85 scholarships in football have made a different commitment and that needs to be addressed."

"The CFP model needs to be looked at differently," Smith said. "As we consider expansion, we ought to consider the structure. The reality is we need to begin to control our own space. We've got to make sure we're careful with antitrust, but at the end of the day, we need different rules."

Expansion of the college football playoff. Not expansion of the big10.

Had me excited for a minute.

In a thread where we've been discussing Kansas switching conferences most of the day, forgive me for getting excited when the headline was "Ohio State AD on the radio today" followed by "as we consider expansion".

It doesn't matter what we spend if the Big10 doesn't invite us. It isn't up to us.

But yay for expanded playoffs that we won't make anytime soon. And new rules since we are already in an FBS conference. No reason we would get "left out" based on his comments about the 10 FBS conferences.

I'm not chasing all of those tangential points and arguments.

The entire point here is that you have one of the most powerful AD's in the country saying out loud that the NCAA can govern the G5 if it wants to, but the Big Boys want out and they're going to play their own game and make their own rules.

Who determines who the Big Boys are? The Ohio State and Michigan and Texas's of the world. Not the Houstons and Cincinnati's.

We are at one of the most critical points in the history of Kansas Athletics, and if staying a Big Boy means accepting less TV rights dollars or paying an astronomical buyout, then you spend that money.
