for real.

how often does a big stick around the system and NOT be rewarded?

Maybe like, Hunter Mickelson? He may have been the same issue as Zach, more of a forward when we needed a 5.

but IIRC he was our starter for those Korea games, so there's that.

Bill’s system seems to be to build the bugs ranked in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s into amazing junior and senior players.

Most of our frosh bigs don’t play bc there is almost always upperclassmen bigs. The frosh bigs then get short leashes.
what frosh HAVE played as bigs?

Dok, I guess, at least when healthy

healthy Embiid too

Arthur was a stud out the gate and started for a while, but looked more froshy later that season

but yea, the vast majority of bigs have to be patient

Silvio, too, but we were super thin that season.

Edit: Marcus, too, but we run different stuff now.

yea Silvio.

But he mostly just played backup minutes.

I'm still impressed he started that OT against Dook's NBA front court and we came out on top, tho that has as much as anything to do with Malik going nuts

and yea Marcus started day 1, but man did he look it.

the Twins were so soft and shot so many airballs that Quintrell got at least one start

edit: actually looking at that 08-09 game log, it looks like Quintrell started day 1, and also randomly again in December, when the twins were struggling

2009 a year where we had no choice but to play frosh. That happens a lot more with guards than bigs.

yea.

Tyshawn was about as ready as a freshman guard can come tho.

IIRC he and Och are the only Self KU guys to start 4 straight years

tho I guess you can kind of count Dok too, injuries aside

Udoka was squarely behind Landen and off the bench before he got hurt that year.

Sasha and DJ also played very early, despite not really being ready for this level.

Giles, too. But he was ready...physically.

Yeah that team had Moody. Padgett transfer was unexpected. Of course, after a coaching change, there’s going to be a lot of turnover.

Padgett really messed up. He could have used the challenge here.

Padgett wasn’t built great for Self’s offense back then and Self was not nearly as adaptable back then as he is now.

Padgett in this Self offense could have been really good.

Speaking of Padgett, forgot he was the interim HC at Louisville when Pitino and Jurich were going through their stuff there. Went 22-14, and 9-9 in the ACC. Not bad. Wonder what he is up to. lol

Anyway, back on topic about UK vs KU.

It was great to see Self be a good fired up and not a get a T and hope that helps fired up.

Coaches vs Cancer. Each program basically picks one game to do it for. It's a tradition to go suits and sneakers.

Same here. I hope they do not replace it and the teams can just add an extra non-con game of their choosing.

Yes. Considering the SEC just poached 2 of our conference's top teams, I think it is fitting that it ends.

Big 12/SEC and Big 10/ACC both are ending their deals.

Very likely that they swap and Big 12 will now play Big 10 or ACC.
